Chess for Android 5.2.3: Network version

Maybe i'm getting old. Yesterday i've remembered that my last post about Chess for Android had left a promise behind, about the network version of the same app.

Aart Bik has done it weeks ago but i've forgot to post it. You can download it HERE and enjoy the remote engine feature which will enable games between your Android engine vs your favorite PC engines.

A copy of the Google Play version without that network feature is also available HERE.

Chess Genius 3.0.2 for Android

Better be late than sorry! Chess Genius for Android is updated to 3.0.2 with below notice.

If you purchased it previously, you are already warned about the update. But if not, it's your second chance to buy the monster of 1990s, ported to Android at GOOGLE PLAY.

WHAT'S NEW
* Version 3.0.2 fixes a bug that caused occasional crashes

Android UCI engine update: Arasan 19.0.1 bundled with Acid Ape Chess

After a couple of discussions and claims about compatibility, the last version of Arasan bundled with Acid Ape Chess gets the passport for Rapidroid!

It was unexpected that v19.0.1 requires the presence of the configuration file "arasan.rc" in the same folder, unlike previous versions.

Without the config file, the build may run or not depending on your hardware. In my case, it could run with the older Exynos 4210 but not with the newer Exynos 4412.

I've verified that switching to single core makes it run okay but that's not the point, not a solution at all. I kept insisting by installing the arasan.rc file provided within Ape Chess in a different folder of the apk.

The config file didn't only fix the quad core functionality but also provided with further options for logging, tablebase setup and book usage. I hereby confirm at least the logging toggle works. You can tweak the rc file for your own choices.

The link i'm sharing HERE contains all available builds by architecture as well as the "arasan.rc" that you must install with the engine. You need them both.

Try the above and report your experience.

And for the collectors: A 7z package HERE contains the previous Arasan 18.3 builds bundled with Ape Chess Beta 10.

Android XB engine update: Scorpio 2.7.7 bundled with Acid Ape Chess

This set of builds will be appealing not only for collectors but especially to all x86 and 64-bit users, given that JA builds were made for 32-bit arm5 and arm7 only.

GET Scorpio 2.7.7 for 32/64 bit arm & x86

Android UCI engine oldies: Cheng 4 0.36c bundled with Acid Ape Chess

The reason i'm calling this an oldie is that the JA version (4.038) is more recent.

4.036c build in subject comes bundled with Acid Ape Chess, as a native binary. Threfore it can be used as a standalone engine with other GUI's without problem.

GET Cheng4 0.36c bundled with Acid Ape Chess Beta 10 for arm & x86

Acid Ape Chess Beta 10.1 ft Arasan 19.0.1

It's nice to see Ape Chess improving regularly toward a better competition versus favorite GUI's like Chess for Android and Droidfish.

Once you get familiar with the menus, i guess you can even prefer Ape to above favorites unless you are directly concerned with engine features. Droidfish is very stable, CfA is a must for tourneys and Ape is beautiful!

The new version is Beta 10.1 and it features a very recent build of Arasan, v19.0.1 as well as Cheng4 0.36c and Scorpio 2.7.7. While we've got Cheng 4.38 and Scorpio 2.7.7 by Jim Ablett already, the new Arasan is appealing. Another important detail is that Ape provides several engine builds for different architectures unlike JA builds.

You can GET Acid Ape Chess free from Google Play.

Regarding the bundled engines, stay tuned for dedicated posts to follow this one.

Komodo 10 for Android: Will it overtake Stockfish?

I wanna keep cautious with Komodo 10 after the disappointment with 9.3 and 9.42 which both showed very poor progress over 9.2.

As of today, Stockfish leads all major rating lists based on Windows platform. Android is no exception for Komodo. The reptile is currently performing much weaker on Android 32-bit, about 30 ELO behind Stockfish 7.

Bearing in mind that current Stockfish development versions promise serious improvements over SF7 already, i think Komodo 10 needs a remarkable boost to cope with them.

Further Rapidroid gauntlets will show exactly how much the gap changed in last months.

Nevertheless, i would be more than happy to see more threats around against Stockfish, other new engines ported to Android. According to TCEC Season-9, some competitive engines clearly overtake the old Critter 1.6a, which is still #3 behind Stockfish and Komodo.

Imagine that we could have Jonny, Andsacs, Fire, Nirvana, Raptor too... running in Rapidroid. Wow!

Then i woke up! It seems i had a dream...

Android UCI engine update: Stockfish dev't 2016.07.16

I'm sure fishers will be happy to install the latest development version of Stockfish ported to Android. Thanks must be given to Peter Ă–sterlund for compiling it.

Based on ongoing blitz gauntlets (not yet shared here), even 2016.05.28 is way stronger than Stockfish 7 which came with Droidfish 1.60.

I guess the August release of Rapidroid will include this development version of Stockfish versus Komodo 10. Rounds are currently being replayed on my Exynos' to reveal this. And be sure that about tthe poor boys are about to melt in my refrigerator!

Android UCI engine update: Sayuri 2016.07.13

Sayuri continues to be regularly updated by its author. And unfortunately, i continue to see it fail under Chess for Android. I still have no working build after 2016.04.09.

In case someone manages to have Sayuri running okay, i'll be glad to know how and under which device hardware/software...

Komodo 8 for Android: Google Play version becomes free!

It's good news that the Komodo team started to follow the same commercial scheme as they used to do with the PC versions.

The basic rule tells: "Once a new K version is released, the K-2 version becomes free." Now, this rule is covering Komodo 8 for Android too, since they've released Komodo 10 yesterday.

You will remember that i had posted about Komodo 8 Free previously but that was a different binary bundled with the PC release. Because it was compiled for arm5 processors, it ran slower than the sold version and only on arm, only with older Android versions.

What you can get now is the exact Google Play version which others have paid until Komodo 10 comes!

GET Komodo 8 Free for Android at Google Play

P.S.: I've tried some tricks to manage Komodo 8 installation in different ways. They all failed. It seems the licence checking remained in place. So, there's no way to install standalone binaries stripped from the apk. They just exit. Installing an apk doesn't work either. Even when connected to the web, apk installation can't pass the licence checking. The only working method is to install the free app via Google Play.

Android UCI engine update: Komodo 10

At last, following several weeks of wait, the latest Komodo release comes to Android, as a standalone application without changing anything on your Komodo 9 installation. This means that, it's possible to have Komodo 8, 9 and 10 cohabiting separately, in peace!

One may even conduct a closed tournament between all three mobile reptiles.

The app is paid as usual like previous versions. Hopefully what you must pay is about ten times cheaper than the PC version. It remains a challenging offer.

I guess it's useful to notify that a free version does not and will not exist anywhere until Komodo Team releases Komodo 12 in the future and make K10 free. DO NOT try to find apk's from the web. All of them are and will be malicious traps. Keep in mind that Komodo 10 doesn't work not run if you didn't buy it from Google Play.

Android UCI engine oldies: Stockfish 3.X collection

Here is the third episode of "Unbearable Lightness of Summarizing Countless Android builds of Stockfish" featuring Stockfish threee, released officially on 30-April-2013 for Windows.
If you have downloaded below four builds previously, you may just skip them. They were previously shared via my box repository and only the filenames are changed to tell more about pie/nopie status:
Stockfish_3.0.OR.JA_uci.arm5.pie: HERE
Stockfish_3.0.DF151_uci.arm5.nopie: HERE
Stockfish_3.0.DF151_uci.arm7.nopie: HERE
Stockfish_3.0.DF151_uci.x86.nopie: HERE

To conclude the investigation, today's additional uploads are the following:

CEPA versions come with Chess Engines Play Analyze 3.7 and they are compiled by its author. Regarding the two development versions, their origin are unknown to me for the moment.

Nevertheless, don't forget to warn me in case you find another 3.X somehow somewhere!

Android UCI engine update: Texel 1.06

Finally... following a lot of alphas. Thanks to Peter Ă–sterlund.

The Texel app released on Google Play version is downloadable HERE. It comes with various versions of which i'm sharing the important ones. They require Android 4.1+.

GET Texel 1.06 for arm8 64-bit
GET Texel 1.06 for x86 32-bit
GET Texel 1.06 for x86 64-bit

There are also two prior versions released via Peter's repository, longer in filesize. I guess they contain exactly the same code packed with less compression. I've seen no difference between these and the ones released with the GP app. You may keep them somewhere but you'd better refer to the official release.

GET Texel 1.06 for arm7 32-bit (probably first compile)

P.S.: As seen in a comment below, the so-called first compile for 32-bit works also on devices prior to 4.1. Good to hear that.

Android UCI engine oldies: GNU Chess 5.07

It looks like our Android engine collection is going to the extremes step by step!

I've been sent 4 ancient builds of GNU Chess recently. Although they are made for slower arm5 32-bit, they are functioning flawlessly even on my humble Exynos 4210 at the short TC of 120+1. On yours, that will probably be the same.

GET GNU Chess 5.07.153.3b
GET GNU Chess 5.07.173.b

All above builds belong to the main branch of GNU and it should not be mixed with the other branch based on Fruit code, identified with 6.XX version numbers.

The current version playing in Rapidroid is 5.60 was made available HERE in my repository a long ago.

Chess Free 2.38 by AI Factory

AI Factory is the developer of many board game implementations for Android, including Chess, Go, etc.

I've had Chess Free installed on my devices since two years for casual play from time to time and i've seen many updates. It uses Microsoft's Treebeard engine, therefore it doesn't play at the highest levels at all. I would not expect more than 1800 ELO according to a few manual games i've conducted various UCI engines.
You may give a try on this nice looking app if you don't especially need something very professional. What i like in Chess Free AI is the Fischer clock feature which is usually ignored in many standalone apps. What i hate most is the kiddy strength settings like easy, medium, hard. Chess AI doesn't come with these at least.

GET Chess Free AI at GooglePlay.

In case you don't want ads, you may purchase the paid version HERE. It's cheap enough.

Chess Genius 3.0.1 for Android

Richard Lang's legendary post-Mephisto engine Chess Genius is still updating. Although the main code is too old to scale in parallel to hardware improvements, Chess Genius can reach 2500 ELO with a single core on a mobile.

Indeed, one might state it's useless to be interested in such "weak" engine while Stockfish is available. He will be partly right but i'm old enough to appreciate the survival of an old buddy without caring about strength. Memories matter!

I've never owned a Mephisto but i've played with Chess Genius on a Palm Handheld, on a Windows Mobile phone, on IOS, on PC and finally on Android.

The last update from 2.6.4 to 3.0.1 promises some speed up and new time control features making it a great candidate for manual games in Rapidroid. I think i won't keep myself from that if i can find enough spare time (Usually impossible when you have a job!)

For more info on Android version, visit the developer's page: HERE

Chess Genius 3.0.1 can be purchased at GOOGLE PLAY. A light version comes also as a free alternaive HERE.

Android UCI engine update: Sugar 2016.04.15 // ERRATUM

Sugar is one of the strongest Stockfish derivatives. I had previously shared 2015.04.15 version HERE. No doubt that it became quite older since.

Thanks to Alex, a new compile is available now. It's made for arm5 and probably loses some search speed compared to arm7. However, i guess it can reach 3250-3300 ELO.

GET Sugar 2016.04.15 for arm5 32-bit

POST SCRIPTUM / ERRATUM:

The posted binary appears to be exactly the same as the previously posted one. There's no new compile of Sugar other than 2015.04.16. So, all irrelevant information and files are deleted.

Only the logo remains. I prepared it today and won't delete it :-)

Meanwhile, the only build, still the latest one, benefits from a filename correction and becomes 2015.04.16 (instead of 050415) to correctly link with the source commit date and also to avoid misunderstandings related to date formats, a source of inaccuracy frequently observed with Stockfish development builds.

Lesson learned: DDMMYY and YYMMDD can be mind confusing. Always prefer YYYYMMDD!

Android UCI engine update: Texel 1.06a49

Yet another alpha build of Texel by Peter Ă–sterlund... Actually we can't wait for official 1.06, given that Texel finished with TCEC-9. Go Peter go!

Android UCI engine update: Ethereal 7.70

Following our request, Andy Grant has come back to the Android port of his engine Ethereal and compiled the most recent version for arm5.

The good news is that the new build works fine on my older Exynos 4210 arm7. It will probably do the same on never processors. Though we don't know about Lollipop and beyond. I didn't add yet nopie or pie to the binary as i couldn't test under Marshmallow. So please report whether Ethereal works with such environment if you own one.

There are somehow some minor remarks for Andy:
* The version is not in the ID label, it only shows Ethereal. Would be better if it shows "Ethereal 7.70"
* He compiled for arm5T which is rarely seen. Most builds are targeting for arm5TE. He can switch to 5TE.
* He may try to compile for arm7A for higher performance.
A young talent!
Thanks to Andy. I hope to introduce Ethereal in Rapidroid as soon as possible.

Android XB engine oldies: Hoichess 0.10.3 alternative build

Hooray, in the name of the collecting spirit! This makes the third Hoichess in the repository:

GET Hoichess 0.12.1 JA: Previously posted, plays in Rapidroid
GET Hoichess 0.10.3 JA: Previously posted
GET Hoichess 0.10.3 by unknown editor: JUST ADDED

There is a feedback to suggest that the latter used to be bundled in a previous version of pbChess application. Though, we couldn't verify that yet because there's no apk available. We still don't know who compiled it.

Android UCI engine oldies: Zurichess Basel

In reply to a visitor's (good catch!) request, i'm offering HERE a download link for Zurichess Basel for collectors. I couldn't test it under Marshmallow so i don't know whether this arm5 build works on Android versions beyond Kitkat.

Since Basel had been quickly replaced by Fribourg (mentioned in this old POST), i had not seen any interest in sharing it at that time. But frankly speaking, those were the times where the main intention was NOT to create a complete collection but rather to keep copies of the engines playing in Rapidroid.

Nowadays, the visitors seem to require all engines and all versions and even all different builds of the same versions, accessible in a unique repository. Well, okay, you're gonna get what you want!

Android UCI engine oldies: Stockfish 2.X collection

I guess it's time to recapitulate everything about old Stockfish builds, bearing in mind they've become too many to count and difficult to distinguish.

Last week i had started with 1.X and hopefully it was way too easy with just two builds. I had promised to repeat the same with the successors, so today i do it.

After a few compatibility tests i've conducted on Android Jellybean and Marshmallow, i've prefered to rename all the builds in such a way to reflect the source (often the editor and/or the application) as well as the compatibility level, in order to help the user select the suitable build.

Notice the following basics:
If arm5 or arm7 and no pie: use with Arm 32-bit, up to Kitkat
If arm8: use with Arm 64-bit, Lollipop and Marshmallow
If x86 / no pie: use with Intel 32-bit, up to Kitkat
If x86 / pie: use with Intel 32-bit, Lollipop and Marshmallow
If x86_64: use with Intel 64-bit, Lollipop and Marshmallow

...or if above basics look complex, try each build until you find the good one.

And now, here are all 2.X fishes i've collected so far, compressed with 7Z. I've tried to sort them in chronological order of appearance for your convenience. I hope the order is correct.

RAPIDROID RELOADED: July-2016

In the heat of a sweaty and sudden summer of June, all efforts have been spent to speed up the big transformation based on better time control management by Chess for Android 5.2.3.

I've managed to replay rounds 3 to 6 out of 19 total rounds but there are still tons of games to replace, a few months work to go.

The highlights of this release:
* ADDED AnkanChess 0.0
* ADDED Minimardi 1.3
* UPDATED Pawny 1.0 to 1.2
* DISQUALIFIED PurpleHaze due to several early terminations

Targets for next release:
* Introduce latest development versions of Stockfish & Texel in case no official updates come.

Android UCI engine update: Stockfish dev't 2016.06.26

I'm sure these builds bundled with the new 3.7 version of CEPA will excite a lot of chess freaks, especially those who like the taste of the fish! All of them are 32-bit only. Make sure you choose the PIE version if you're on Android 5.0 and up.

CEPA new version 3.7 is out

The alternative chess GUI for Android, Chess Engines Play and Analysis (CEPA) got updated to 3.7 on June,30th.

I can't state CEPA is the best among other GUI's available. However, one thing is sure: It comes with the newest Stockfish development builds, dated June,26th.

The app can be downloaded via GOOGLE PLAY as usual.

Regarding the bundled engines, i will post Stockfish in a separate post, in case you are only interested in these but not the app.
