Android UCI engine update: Stockfish dev't 2016.08.28

As usual, here i'm sharing links to the binaries of the most recent Stockfish development version compiled by Peter Ă–sterlund and bundled with the recent Droidfish 1.62 update.

In case you don't like Droidfish (really?), you can download and install the one that matches best your device configuration and use it with another GUI like Chess for Android too.

If you don't know what is pie, no pie., i would say "Nevermind! It's a Google thing related to their API levels and restrictions about memory allocation". As a chess engine user, you really don't have to learn more about it.

As a method which will work all the time even for a beginner, you may follow below steps:

A) If your processor is not an Intel:
* Start with arm8,
* If error, try arm7 pie,
* If error, try arm7 no pie,
* If error, try arm5 pie,
* If error, try arm5 no pie,
* If still error, blame me!

B) If your processor is an Intel:
* Start with x86_64
* If error, try x86 pie,
* If error, try x86 no pie,
* If still error, blame me!

C) Do not ever blame me!

Droidfish 1.62 ft Stockfish dev't 2016.08.28

Thanks to Peter Ă–sterlund for updating his nice GUI which always remains unique even for an engine-to-engine tournament freak like me.

Why? Because it allows negative clocks without flagging, shortlty said, it allows comfortable manual games between engines and i can even take a coffee break between moves, when necessary.

Without doubt, above fantasy applies to the times i don't have a job to take 12 hours minimum a day and without too much matters in the family. It makes almost one year that i can't spend time for manual games.

In manual games, unfortunately Chess for Android does not allow me to pause the clock for such experiments and i'm not fast enough to enter moves in milliseconds. Sad!

Coming back to the last Droidfish 1.62 version, the changes are:
* Fixed engine communication error in Android N,
* Updated Stockfish engine to 2016-08-28 development version.

For most of us, it's only the Stockfish development version which makes the update remarkable given that Android Nougat has not yet spreaded much.

You can install the new Droidfish from GOOGLE PLAY.

As an alternative and also in order to archive a copy in a different location, you can download the apk directly from my repository: HERE.

Android UCI engine update: Zurichess Graubuenden

Zurichess is using city names from Switzerland in alphabetical order to track versions. The last build for Android was Geneva and it was compiled by Jim Ablett. Following his (temporary?) hiatus, the author Alexandru Mosoi has kindly included a Linux-arm build of his latest release.

In contrast with my first statement, it appears that Linux-arm build runs okay with Android. So, there's nothing left to do but start using it because accordig to Alexandru, Graubuenden is scoring +110 ELO in self play against Glarus, which is supposed to play better than Geneva (2360 ELO in Rapidroid).

Android UCI engine update: Sayuri 2016.08.20

Yet another update to Sayuri downloadable HERE. Don't forget to notify if it runs on your device with Chess for Android and without issues.

Acid Ape Chess Beta 11.2

The new version of Acid Ape Chess can be downloaded from Google Play. Always a nice alternative to other Android chess GUI's...

WHAT'S NEW:
* Moves are now indicated with stylish arrows,
* The engine evaluation score is displayed in the move indicators,
* The last move can now be displayed.

Android UCI engine update: Stockfish dev't 2016.08.02

The following builds are coming with the app in subject of the previous post, CEPA 3.9.

They are the latest Stockfish builds available for Android as of today. Please note that they are all compiled for 32-bit. Ayways, they are supposed to work with 64-bit Android as well.

CEPA new version 3.9 is out with new Stockfish dev't 2016.08.02

Chess Engines Play & Analysis (CEPA in short) is updated to v3.9. It's an alternative GUI which is progressing with continous improvements. The major hit of this version is the bundled Stockfish build. I guess many users will enjoy running that latest one, not yet released anywhere else for Android.

WHAT'S NEW v3.8-v3.9:
* SF20160802
* New option change squares color fast
* You can choose the colors of the squares between two colors
* Fixed bugs Open Eng engines

Stockfish dev 2016.06.26 vs Stockfish dev 2016.07.16

In order to validate my choice of the development version of Stockfish to meet with Komodo 10 in Rapidroid, i've played a match between 2016.16.26 and 2016.07.16.

The build of Jun,26th is taken form CEPA3.7 while the other one, most recent one as of today is compiled by Peter Ă–sterlund.

Some testers reported than 160626 is stronger and criticized my decision, though there are exceptions like Nathanael Russell's tests which favoured the latest build. I admit that all reported results are valid in the conditions adopted. However, i've choosen to increase the timing a little bit more and also the number of games to play to dig the truth.

Using below conditions (my basic quick test setting) 2016.07.16 had no problem to overcome 2016.06.26:
Processor: RK3188 quad core 1.4 Ghz downclocked to 1.0 Ghz (Throttle free!)
Hash: 256MB (although may not be mandatory, makes no harm)
TC: 300+1
Openings: TCEC-7 all 306 positions for 612 total number of games

This setup theoritically delivers about 440 Knps x (5+1) sec/move = 2.64 Mn average per move, while the standard Rapidroid setup delivers 800 Knps x (15+1) sec/move = 12 Mn average per move. There's a loss of quality sacrificed for speed here but i guess it's tolerable.

Regarding the results, here's the final screenshot by Chess for Android:
And a quick summary reported by Elostat:
Stockfish 2016-07-16 : 612 (+ 99,=453,- 60), 53.2 %
Stockfish 160626     : 612 (+ 60,=453,- 99), 46.8 %

The gap calculated is 22 ELO vs an error margin of 14 ELO. I didn't attempt to calculate LOS but the experience tells the current result is enough to conclude. The latest build is OK.

RAPIDROID RELOADED: August-2016 with K10, SF160716, Texel 1.06

In July, i've managed to replay rounds 7, 8 and 9 out of 19 total, including a few but major engine updates at the top.

Unfortunately any non-cumulative rating experiment suffers from deleted games in order to avoid rating distortion. Therefore, Rapidroid is not like CCRL but ressembles rather to IPON. Since only the latest versions are included, the last one comes in and flushes out the previous one completely. That's what slows down the progress.

The number of games played by Komodo, Stockfish and Texel should only give a rough idea for the moment. It's not yet clear enough who's gonna come number 1. But at least, one thing is sure: K10 worked way better than K9.42.

Regarding the new Texel, half of the games played didn't yet reveal a boost.

The highlights of this release:
* ADDED Ethereal 7.70 (#70 with 2341 ELO)
* UPDATED Komodo 9.42 to 10
* UPDATED Stockfish 7 to 2016-07-16
* UPDATED Texel 1.05 to 1.06

Targets for next release:
* Update more  games according to corrected time control management of Chess for Android, concerning rounds 10 to 12 out of 19.

Android UCI engine updates: Sayuri 2016.07.25 and 2016.08.04

Nothing changes for me in terms of compatibility with my devices. I still can't run Sayuri builds after 2016.04.09, the last good one.

We have two new versions compiled by the author. I've tested the first one without success on Exynos but not yet the latest one. Maybe you can be the lucky one to get it running fine under Chess for Android.

Chess Free by AI Factory Ltd updated to 2.41

According to the developers notice, Chess Free AI may bring some more ELOs after this last update.

Although i'm interested to test its level, i can't find enough spare time for manual games. My guess is 1800 to 1900 ELO, based on my "age of stones" games vs UCI engines though some other users had suggested higher for previous versions.
